It is a timeless principle brought forth with modern technology.  Since the beginning of human consciousness, the rhythm of drums, tones, and light have had hypnotic effects on the human mind.

Hans Berger discovered the Alpha brainwave in 1929 and shortly thereafter, scientists found that Alpha wave could be enhanced beyond its natural frequency by the use of rhythmically configured light, a strobe effect, if you will.
